The Fundamentals of Sustainable Engineering & Design

sustainable engineeringOver the past couple hundred years, the earth’s climate, water and other natural resources have sustained heavy damage and continue to rapidly deteriorate. We are discovering the fact that without drastic action and radical change in our perspective, there won’t be enough natural resources for future generations to enjoy.

The good news is, the awareness for sustainability in Connecticut has risen and has also become an important part of our daily lives. Responsible homeowners and industrialists are now implementing Sustainable Design in their homes and businesses and Sustainable Engineering has become an important part of the construction industry. Godfrey-Hoffman & Hodge are strong advocates of sustainable engineering, not only here in Connecticut, but throughout New England.

What is Sustainable Engineering?

Sustainable Engineering is the science of designing and engineering systems that safeguard the availability of natural resources for future needs. To understand it clearly, a simple example of Sustainable Engineering is when a Sustainable engineer is designing a house site. The engineer does not just design site improvements and location, but he or she takes into consideration the materials that will be used, the impact it will produce on the land, and other things that can limit the availability of our natural resources.

Why Do We Need to Adapt Sustainable Engineering?

Sustainable Engineering should be adapted because we need to accept the fact that our environment has been significantly exploited and that we are all directly or indirectly responsible for it. We are living in a critical period when we need to decide whether we want our future generation to enjoy the same benefits that we currently have or leave them with repercussions from our carbon footprint. With the current environmental issues that we are facing today, everyone has to do his or her share to ensure a viable future for generations to come.

Key Takeaways:

  • Sustainable Engineering can be defined as responsible engineering or engineering with a conscience.

  • Sustainable Engineers are people who weigh the impact of their actions and make sure that natural resources and the environment is sustainable for future generations.
